  1. Is Podmaxx a replacement for iTunes, I mean what the heck is it?

Podmaxx is an iPod utility that allows users to Transfer songs from their iPod to their PC and/or Itunes! It does not replace Itunes, but works in conjunction with Itunes API, allowing the user to fully control the contents of their music beyond the limits of Itunes alone. Users can also sync email, contacts, calendar and notes via Outlook. They can download Weekly weather reports, Horoscopes, the daily news, local Movie times and Podcasts to their iPod’s and much much more! We are looking for this to do well for us in the retail space.

  4. Track selection, Podmaxx has a select all and single song select. When the user is going through a large play list and there are specific tracks they want–how can they filter out the tracks that they don’t want?

You have the same multiple file select options as you do with any windows file list – holding down the shift key selects all songs between two points and holding down the control key selects multiple songs not in sequence. Also you can filter your list of songs by selecting only the genres, albums, and/or artists you want. The same rules apply for multiple select, so, for example, if you only wanted to select all songs by Nas and Eve, you would go to the Artists list, hold down the Control key and click on Nas and Eve. The Song list below would then list only songs on the iPod by those two artists. You could further filter your list by then clicking on only the albums you want (if you had more than one album by each artist) or you could multiple select only the songs in the filtered list you want.

  5. Why don’t downloaded Podcasts download straight to my iPod?

As with iTunes, when new content is being added, Podmaxx will not automatically update the iPod, even though the iPod is connected. This is true of podcasts downloaded through Podmaxx or songs downloaded from the iTunes Music store through the iTunes interface. You end up having to right–click on the iPod in the iTunes list and select "update", eject and reattach your iPod, or relaunch iTunes. This is an unfortunate deficiency in iTunes currently. We can try to search for solutions to this problem in an update, but it really depends on the iTunes API, not what Podmaxx is doing.

  6. Can I download my own podcasts or do I have to user Podmaxx’s directory?

The user has the option to manually input their own podcasts URL’s or they can reference a prepopulated directory (that taps into iPodder.org’s podcast directory ). If iPodder.org is down for updates etc, then the directory functionality obviously will not work. Currently there is no option to download part of a podcast (using the directory functionality). The user selects a topic and whatever is available for that topic is downloaded.

  9. Podmaxx is not able to transfer over all the songs from the iPod.

Depending on the source of the song file, Podmaxx may experience issues with moving them over from the iPod. Music files/mp3’s from "dubious" sources (meaning not from legal music download services) may not transfer properly and cause Podmaxx to fail. We are currently conducting research in order to address this issue.

  10. Will Podmaxx transfer information from my Palm?

  12. How does Podmaxx handle folder creation when transferring songs?

During the song transfer process, Podmaxx can create folders to place the songs into. The most common method is to have the topmost directory be the genre directory, then artist directories under that, then album directories under those. There are several predefined directory structures you can select or you can select "custom" and define your own structure. This directory structure will be created under the folder selected as the destination folder.

  13. Where does Podmaxx put the information I transfer (like Weather, Horoscopes, etc) in my iPod?

All that information is stored under Notes on the iPod. You need to make sure you have selected the information, are connected to the internet, and have synched the data through Podmaxx to your iPod. For instance, weather will show up under Notes>Weather>(Location).

  14. What iPod models does Podmaxx support?

Podmaxx offers full functionality on all 3G and 4G iPod, iPod mini, iPod photo, and iPod nano.

Podmaxx also works with 1G and 2G full size iPods, but any text information – news, weather, etc. – is stored in the Contacts area of the iPod, because these earlier versions did not have a Notes area.

Podmaxx offers limited functionality with the iPod Shuffle. You can use Podmaxx’s Song features (transfer music from iPod back to your PC, create listings of the music on your iPod, update your play counts in iTunes), and Backup feature (save files from your PC to your Shuffle), and Podcast management. Most of the other features require a screen to view on your iPod. Since the Shuffle has no screen, the other features are unusable.

  15. I am getting an error 2 or 4 when I try to activate Podmaxx.

Error 2 or 4 usually indicates that you have a firewall or security software blocking access to the ports required in order to do the activation online. If you’re using Windows XP, SP2, disable temporarily the firewall that comes with XP. If you have other firewall software installed, disable that temporarily to do the activation.
